How to use this calculator
- Name project scope and enter approximate room count.
- Add materials, labor, permits, disposal, and miscellaneous allowances.
- Set target budget, taxes, contingency and already-made payments. Save snapshots for comparisons.
The calculation formula
Subtotal = sum of project cost lines. Contingency = subtotal × contingency%. Tax = (materials + labor) × tax%. Total = subtotal + contingency + tax. Budget remaining = target − total. Unpaid = total − payments.
Worked example
With $25,500 in direct project costs, 15% contingency ($3,825) and 5% tax on $22,500 of materials and labor ($1,125), the total is $30,450. Against a $30,000 target, the plan is $450 over budget.
Assumptions and limitations
- Sales tax bases and permit/tax treatment vary; the default tax base is strictly materials plus labor.
- Payments already made do not reduce the estimated project total; they only reduce the unpaid balance.
Actual project costs may be affected by supplier rates, material grade, labor market, location, disposal, site condition, access, permits, taxes, and schedule. All entered prices are yours to revise. See our methodology and disclaimer.
Frequently asked questions
Will payments count as an extra expense?
No. Payments already made are a cash-flow reference, not added to the project estimate.
Does contingency get taxed?
Not in this planner. Taxes apply only to the user-entered materials and labor amounts.
