How to use this calculator
- Enter the overall planned fence run and height.
- Set post spacing, panel width, and gate dimensions.
- Add corners and editable post, panel, gate, and labor prices.
The calculation formula
Net fence length = total length − gate count × gate width. Posts ≈ ceil(net length ÷ post spacing) + 1 + 2 × gates + extra corners. Panels = ceil(net length ÷ panel width × (1 + waste%)).
Worked example
For 100 ft of fence with a 4 ft gate, 8 ft post spacing, and 8 ft panels, the baseline is 13 run posts plus two gate posts; 12 panels before waste.
Assumptions and limitations
- Corners and gates can share or need additional posts depending on layout.
- Local boundary rules, underground utilities and structural loads are outside this calculator.
Actual project costs may be affected by supplier rates, material grade, labor market, location, disposal, site condition, access, permits, taxes, and schedule. All entered prices are yours to revise. See our methodology and disclaimer.
Frequently asked questions
How should I count corners?
Add corners that require extra posts beyond a straight continuous run; a plan drawing is essential.
Does gate width reduce panel length?
Yes. The total gate opening width is subtracted before counting standard panels.
